The Importance of Dental Care for Dogs and Cats

Jul 28, 2025

Just like humans, pets need regular dental care to maintain overall health. Poor oral hygiene can lead to tartar buildup, gum disease, tooth loss and can even affect the heart, liver and kidneys.

Daily brushing is the gold standard, but even weekly brushing can make a difference. Use a pet-friendly toothbrush and toothpaste—never use human toothpaste as it can be toxic to animals.

Dental chews, toys and water additives can also help reduce plaque, but they are not a substitute for professional cleanings. Annual vet dental exams and cleanings are essential to detect issues early and remove tartar that home care can’t reach.

Watch for signs of dental problems like bad breath, drooling, difficulty eating, or pawing at the mouth. By making dental care part of your routine, you’ll help your dog or cat live a longer, healthier life.
