Seasonal Pet Care Tips: Keeping Your Pet Safe Year-Round

Jul 28, 2025

Each season brings unique challenges for pet owners. By adjusting your care routine throughout the year, you can keep your dog or cat safe and comfortable.

In spring, watch out for ticks, fleas and seasonal allergies. Begin or update your parasite prevention plan and wipe your pet’s paws after walks to remove pollen. Be mindful of toxic plants and garden chemicals.

Summer heat can lead to dehydration or heat stroke. Provide plenty of fresh water and shade, avoid midday walks, and never leave pets in a parked car. Consider a cooling mat or vest for long-haired breeds and test pavement with your hand; if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your pet’s paws.

Autumn brings falling leaves and mushrooms that can be toxic. Shorter days mean reduced visibility, so use reflective gear on evening walks. Keep Halloween candy and decorations out of reach, and check for ticks during mild spells.

Winter’s cold and ice require protection, too. Short-haired pets may need a coat, and salt or de-icing chemicals can irritate paws—wipe and moisturize them after walks. Ensure outdoor pets have insulated shelter and watch for signs of frostbite or hypothermia.

By adapting your routine to the season, you’ll keep your pet safe and happy all year long.
